Mississauga Expands DLAN Use Beyond Pan Am Games Event

Mississauga Expands DLAN Use Beyond Pan Am Games Event Image

The City of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, will continue to use DisasterLAN (DLAN) as their incident management system after having used the system to manage the 2015 Pan American and Parapan American Games (PPAG). The City has been granted a license to the system as part of a legacy program enacted by DLAN developer, Buffalo Computer Graphics, Inc. (BCG), and its Canadian partner, FutureShield.

DLAN is a web-based incident management system designed for use in Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs) to manage both planned events and disasters. DLAN provides information, workflow, and communication tools and is accessible from all mobile devices. Mississauga will use DLAN to perform emergency management functions such as resource, task, and logistics management and incident communications on one secure platform. Since DAN is a web-based system, stakeholders will be able to access critical information from any mobile device with an Internet connection, even when away from the EOC.

Mississauga first gained experience with using DLAN when it was used to facilitate coordination and communication among agencies during the 2015 PPAG. The PPAG brought over 8,000 athletes and numerous spectators to the Greater Toronto Area, requiring close coordination among the organizing agencies, including the City of Mississauga. After having used DLAN in this capacity, Mississauga will continue to hold a license to the software that will allow them to manage their own daily operations, emergencies, and preplanned events.

BCG, in conjunction with FutureShield, worked with Mississauga to assess needs and configure DLAN to support their processes and standard operating procedures, allowing it to easily integrate with Mississauga’s workflow. Mississauga’s adoption of the system marks a shift away from pen and paper processes to manage incidents across Ontario.

As the CEMC for Canada's 6th largest city, I realize the importance of following a standardized incident management system and using DLAN to ensure the IMS procedures are followed and technology is available to obtain a common operating picture for the team as quickly as possible. Our community has had incidents in the past including a train derailment, ice storm, gas explosion and flooding but also host many planned events like the Pan Am Games, Ontario Summer Games and numerous festivals, annually. We are always improving our skills and our systems to ensure that we are current in our planning and response capabilities. DLAN is the perfect solution for this next stage for Mississauga. -Teresa Burgess Ogilvie, Manager, Emergency Management at City of Mississauga
